How CD Maturity Value Is Calculated

A Certificate of Deposit grows through standard compound interest, applied monthly, from the deposit date to maturity. Early Withdrawal Penalties

Most CDs lock in their rate in exchange for you agreeing not to touch the funds until maturity. Withdraw early, and the bank typically charges a penalty expressed as a number of months' worth of interest — commonly 3 months for CDs with terms under a year, and more for longer terms.
