How Ovulation Day Is Calculated
Ovulation Day = Last Period Date + (Cycle Length − 14). This formula relies on a well-established fact about the menstrual cycle: the luteal phase — the stretch of time from ovulation until the next period begins — stays relatively fixed at about 14 days for most people, regardless of how long the overall cycle runs. Almost all of the cycle-to-cycle and person-to-person variation in total cycle length comes from the follicular phase, the days before ovulation, not the luteal phase after it.
Why Ovulation Isn't Always "Day 14"
Day 14 is only correct for an exact 28-day cycle (28 − 14 = 14). For a 32-day cycle, the same logic places ovulation around day 18 (32 − 14 = 18); for a 24-day cycle, around day 10 (24 − 14 = 10). Counting forward 14 days from the last period and assuming that's ovulation — the common shortcut — only works by coincidence for a 28-day cycle, and gets progressively less accurate the further a cycle length is from 28 days.
The Fertile Window
The fertile window is the span of days in a cycle when pregnancy is possible, typically estimated as the 5 days before ovulation through the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about 5 days under favorable conditions, while an egg released at ovulation is viable for only around 24 hours — which is why the window extends mostly backward from ovulation rather than forward past it.
Worked Example
For a last period starting on the 1st of a month, with a 30-day average cycle: Ovulation Day = 1st + (30 − 14) = 1st + 16 days = the 17th. The fertile window would then run from the 12th (5 days before ovulation) through the 17th (ovulation day itself).

Assuming every cycle is exactly 28 days is the most common error — cycle length varies meaningfully between individuals, and even for one person from month to month, so entering an actual tracked average rather than the default 28 gives a noticeably more accurate estimate. Treating the calculated date as a certainty rather than an estimate is another — cycle length and ovulation timing can shift due to stress, illness, travel, and many other factors, so this is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed date. Confusing the fertile window with the ovulation day itself is a third: the highest-probability day for conception is ovulation day and the day or two just before it, not evenly spread across the whole window.
