How to Calculate a One-Rep Max

A one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you could lift for a single complete repetition of an exercise. Testing it directly is risky and time-consuming, so lifters and coaches typically estimate it from a lighter set taken to or near failure, using a formula that models how strength output declines as reps increase. This calculator uses the Epley formula, one of the most common estimation formulas used in strength training:

Note this is an estimate reached without ever actually lifting 215.8 pounds; it should be treated as a guide for programming training weights, not a guarantee of what the lifter could lift right now.

Why Accuracy Drops Above 10 Reps

The Epley formula assumes a roughly linear relationship between reps and the percentage of 1RM being lifted, which holds reasonably well for sets in the 1-10 rep range. Beyond about 10 reps, muscular endurance and fatigue management start to influence performance more than raw strength does, so the formula's estimate becomes progressively less reliable — a set of 20 reps taken to failure tells you more about endurance than about your true one-rep max. For the most reliable estimate, use a set taken close to failure somewhere in the 3-8 rep range.

Using the Rep-Range Table for Programming

This is useful for programming training percentages: many strength programs prescribe work sets as a percentage of 1RM (for example, "work up to 80% of your 1RM for 5 reps"), and this table converts that percentage directly into an actual weight to load on the bar.

Common One-Rep Max Estimation Mistakes

Using a set that wasn't taken close to failure — stopping several reps "in the tank" — understates true strength and produces a 1RM estimate that's lower than reality, since the formula assumes the set represents close to maximal effort for that rep count. Using a set with more than about 10 reps is a related mistake, for the accuracy reasons explained above. Attempting to lift the calculated 1RM directly, without working up to it gradually with proper warm-up sets and a spotter, is a safety mistake independent of the formula's accuracy — treat the number as a training guide, not a target to attempt cold.
