How to Calculate Stair Steps, Riser, and Tread
Start from the total vertical rise the stair needs to climb, then divide by a comfortable target riser height — 7.5 inches is a widely used design target — and round to a whole number of steps, since you can't build a fractional step. Dividing the total rise by that whole number of steps gives the actual riser height, which will be close to but not always exactly 7.5 inches.

Why Treads Are One Fewer Than Risers
This trips people up: a stair connecting two floors has one riser for every step up, including the final riser that lands you on the upper floor — but that upper floor itself acts as the last tread, so there's always exactly one fewer physical tread than there are risers. A 5-riser stair has only 4 actual treads between the bottom and top floors. When total run is known, tread depth is the available horizontal run divided by that smaller tread count, not the riser count.
Worked Example
A 36-inch total rise: 36 ÷ 7.5 = 4.8, which rounds to 5 steps. The actual riser is then 36 ÷ 5 = 7.2 inches — slightly under the 7.5-inch target, and within the common 7.75-inch code maximum. If 40 inches of run is available, tread depth is 40 ÷ (5 − 1) = 40 ÷ 4 = 10 inches, right at the common 10-inch code minimum. If run isn't fixed yet, the comfort rule (2 × riser + tread ≈ 25 inches) suggests a tread of 25 − 2 × 7.2 = 10.6 inches instead.

The Riser-Tread Comfort Rule
The "2R + T ≈ 25" rule (twice the riser height plus the tread depth, in inches, should land close to 25) is a long-standing rule of thumb for a stair that feels comfortable to climb — a taller riser paired with a shallower tread, or a shorter riser with a deeper tread, both tend to feel natural, while a mismatch (a tall riser and a shallow tread, or the reverse) feels awkward or unsafe regardless of whether it technically meets code minimums.
Common Stair Calculation Mistakes
Assuming every riser must be exactly 7.5 inches is a common misunderstanding — 7.5 inches is a starting target, not a fixed output; the actual riser height depends on how evenly the total rise divides across a whole number of steps. Confusing riser count with tread count, covered above, is the second most common error.
