How to Calculate Square Footage for an Irregular Space

Most real rooms and lots aren't perfect rectangles — an L-shaped living area, a house with a bump-out or an attached garage, a yard with an angled property line. The standard technique is to split the irregular shape into a set of simple rectangles, measure each rectangle's own length and width, calculate each one's area separately, and add all of them together for the total.

Worked Example

An L-shaped living space split into two rectangles: a main room at 15 ft × 10 ft (150 sqft) and a smaller alcove at 8 ft × 6 ft (48 sqft). Adding them together: 150 + 48 = 198 square feet total — the same number you'd get measuring the true irregular outline directly, without needing to work with an angled or non-rectangular shape at all.

Splitting a Shape Into Rectangles

There's rarely only one correct way to split an irregular floor plan — an L-shape can be split into two rectangles in either of two directions, and both give the same correct total area as long as every part of the space is counted exactly once and nothing overlaps. Sketch the outline first, draw one or more straight lines to divide it into rectangles, then measure each piece independently. Diagonal or curved boundaries need to be approximated by their closest rectangular footprint, or handled as a separate, non-rectangular calculation this tool doesn't cover.

Common Square Footage Mistakes

Double-counting an overlapping area is the most common error when splitting a shape into rectangles — make sure each rectangle covers a distinct part of the floor plan with no overlap between sections. Forgetting a section entirely (a closet, an alcove, a bump-out) is the second most common, and usually the reason a calculated total comes in noticeably lower than a real-world measurement. Treating the sum of each section's individual perimeter as the true outside perimeter of the combined shape is the third — as noted above, that sum double-counts any wall shared between two adjacent sections, so it's only a rough approximation, not exact.
