Worked Example

A 1,500 sqft footprint with a 6/12 pitch: the pitch multiplier is the square root of 1 plus (6 ÷ 12) squared, which is the square root of 1.25, about 1.118. That means the actual roof surface is 1,500 × 1.118 ≈ 1,677 sqft before waste. Adding a 10% waste allowance: 1,677 × 1.10 ≈ 1,845 sqft, or about 18.5 roofing squares rounded up to 19.
